The hackers stole over $2.3 billion in Cryptocurrency since the start of 2022
At the end of the third quarter, losses from attacks and hacks of cryptocurrency projects amounted to $428 million

Hackers have stolen more than $2.3 billion in cryptocurrency since the beginning of 2022. From July to September alone, there were 30 project hacks and nine fraudulent attacks that caused cryptoplatforms and their users to lose more than $428 million, according to a report from blockchain security company ImmuneFi.

The largest theft in the third quarter was the hack of Nomad Bridge project that took $190 million, hackers stole $160 million when they attacked market maker Wintermute, and fraud by developers of Racoon Network and Freedom Protocol resulted in a loss of $20 million.

98.8 percent of all losses were in the DeFi sector of crypto-space. Centralized services lost only 1.2% of the total: $5.2 million was stolen in three incidents.

BNB Chain blockchain accounted for 28.6% of the hacks, followed by Ethereum network at 23.2%. Solana and Avalanche blockchains were attacked in 7.1% of incidents each. Polygon is in fifth place with 5.4%, followed by Fantom (3.6%), Arbitrum (3.6%) and other networks (21.4%).

A total of $2.328 billion worth of cryptocurrency has been stolen from detected incidents this year, most of it at the beginning of the year: hackers stole $1.229 billion in the first quarter. $670 million in the second. The biggest loss this year was caused by the Ronin Bridge hack, which took away $625 million in late March.
